Tool Time Friday | Let your freak flag fly!

Actually that’s a line out of Stephen Still’s song – Almost cut my hair. For those of you who don’t know who Stephen Still is he was with the group – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (orginally just Crosby, Stills & Nash). For those of you who don’t know who CSN&Y are – well, there’s just no hope. FlagFox displays a country flag depicting the location of the current website’s server and provides quick access to detailed location and webserver information. Flagfox is an extension for Mozilla Firefox that shows a flag icon indicating the current website’s server location. It uses relatively little resources, and works by accessing an IP address location database contained within the extension rather than relying on top-level-domain roots like “.com” or “.uk”. Clicking the icon loads Geotool, which provides a map of the location as well as more detailed information such as the ISP, city, and local time. The context menu also provides quick access to information about the country of origin, as well as the ability to lookup the domain’s registrant via Whois. Uses of Flagfox range from simply educating users about the global nature of the Internet to: * SEO and web development research * Indicating the native languages and legal jurisdictions for webservers * Warning when sites that are not in the country the say they are * Quickly viewing/copying server IP addresses for diagnostic and other uses Flagfox is fairly customizable, allowing users to choose between two icon sets with positioning options anywhere in the address or status bar. Advanced users may create their own custom lookup to perform specialized searches for the current server. So, as I said, let your freak flag fly ! Tool Time Friday | Need some privacy?

Ever wondered why you are still tracked though you tried everything to prevent it? BetterPrivacy is a Super Cookie Safeguard which protects from usually not deletable LSO’s. It blocks longterm tracking on Google, YouTube Ebay and many other domains. Better Privacy serves to protect against not deletable longterm cookies, a new generation of ‘Super-Cookie’, which silently conquered the internet. This new cookie generation offers unlimited user tracking to industry and market research. Concerning privacy Flash- and DOM Storage objects are most critical. This addon was made to make users aware of those hidden, never expiring objects and to offer an easy way to get rid of them – since browsers are unable to do that for you. Flash-cookies (Local Shared Objects, LSO) are pieces of information placed on your computer by a Flash plugin. Those Super-Cookies are placed in central system folders and so protected from deletion. They are frequently used like standard browser cookies. Although their thread potential is much higher as of conventional cookies, only few users began to take notice of them. It is of frequent occurrence that -after a time- hundreds of those Flash-cookies reside in special folders. And they won’t be deleted – never. BetterPrivacy can stop them, e.g. by allowing to silently remove those objects on every browser exit. So this extension becomes sort of “install and forget add-on”. Usually automatic deletion is safe (no negative impact on your browsing), especially if the deletion timer is activated. The timer can delay automatic deletion for new or modified Flash-cookies which might be in use. It also allows to delete those objects immediately if desired. With BetterPrivacy it is possible to review, protect or delete new Flash-cookies individually. Users who wish to to manage all cookies manually can disable the automatic functions. BetterPrivacy also protects against ‘DOM Storage’ longterm tracking, a browser feature which has been granted by the major browser manufactures. Easy as pie ! Tool Time Friday | Tower of Babel?

Well, not really. How about BabelFish? BabelFish is an easy, highly customizeable, and fast Firefox translation extension: Provides two translation services and additional access to Google’s dictionary! Translate words or a whole text… – with a doubleclick. – just by highlighting – just by hovering a word with the mouse – via context menu – with a middle mouse click – with Alt+leftclick – with Alt+rightclick – even supports keyboard only operations The translation will be displayed as a small popup on the same page, right below the text you wished to translate. So you can keep your eyes on the text and there is no need to close another translation-window. Optional the translation can be displayed in a separated panel below the document or as really tiny tooltip when you hover a word with the mouse. Currently available translation services are Yahoo and Google including Google’s dictionary. Quickly (one click) switch to the other service to see an alternative translation result. This is an important feature as the translation services sometimes provide different results for the same text. Easily switch the translation direction (one click): The backwards translation offers a good way to check a translation for correctness (e.g. in textareas). BabelFish provides many additional features like language detection, service fallback algorithm and even auto-language can be configured. To change the language you may use the statusbar icon, the FireFox tools menu or just click ‘L’ while a translation tooltip is visible. Creation of predefined translations turns any language switching to a simple task. A copy button makes it easy to copy the translation result to another destination etc. What can be easier ?
